Although this has taken place a couple of days ago, before the South Carolina primaries, I can not get this out of my mind. Trump, during yet another speech stirring up his hateful and xenophobic supporters, recounted an alleged incident involving WW I American Army General John “Black Jack” Pershing. According to the unauthenticated story, Pershing ordered the execution of 49 muslim prisoners with bullets dripped in pigs’ blood. If the story were true, it would amount to a massacre and a war crime.
If Trump is so enamored with this kind of treatment, perhaps he should have told the story of how the entire population of the Czech village of Lidice was massacred by the Nazis after Hitler’s henchman, Reinhard Heidrich, was ambushed and assassinated by underground freedom fighters. Hitler, of course, considered these men to be terrorists, and a total of 1,300 men, women and children were killed as retribution for the “terrorist act.”
This would have been as compelling — perhaps an even more effective –story as that of Pershing. This also would have had the added benefit that Trump’s neo-Nazi supporters would have loved this tale.
I am not suggesting that all of Trump’s supporters are Nazis or skinheads or blood thirsty hooligans. But every decent American should condemn stories such as the Pershing anecdote, and should call Trump to task for relishing to tell it. Shame on you, Trump.
